The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward Courtney (ASN: 33803505), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 5 September 1944, in France. Private First Class Courtney, assigned as radio operator to an observation party, was one of several wounded when the observation post underwent heavy enemy artillery fire. Although wounded, he volunteered to go for vitally needed medical assistance over exposed ground in full view of the enemy and under continuous artillery fire. He then returned with medical personnel and assisted them in treating and evacuating the wounded before being treated for his own wounds. The courage and complete disregard of personal safety in aiding wounded comrades displayed by Private First Class Courtney reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
