The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Daniel R. Constable (ASN: 35685401), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 8 March 1945, in Germany. Sergeant Constable, Chief of the 5th section, Battery A, was riding in the lead vehicle of his ammunition section which was part of a large convoy on an overcrowded road when the front wheel of his truck hit an unexploded 4.5-inch German Bazooka round, throwing it into the spring structure of the truck, detonating the fuze: the subsequent burning of the propellant charge quickly enveloping the front of the vehicle in flame. Without hesitation, Sergeant Constable, donning his gloves, crawled under the burning vehicle, removed the still unexploded head of the rocket and carried it a safe distance from the convoy which consisted of other loaded ammunition trucks as well as his own and then proceeded to extinguish the flames. The coo-headedness and courage shown by Sergeant Constable by his willingness to risk his life to save the lives of his fellow soldiers and much valuable material, reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
