The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Captain Charley Dunbeck (MCSN: 0-1133), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 43d Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, 4 October 1918. Although wounded in the head and in a position exposed to intense machine-gun and artillery fire, Captain Dunbeck refused to be evacuated until he had personally given instructions to the second-in-command for carrying on the advance.
