(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Staff Sergeant Richard J. Collins, United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action on 25 January 1945, at Cabaruan, Luzon, Philippine Islands. When his unit was pinned down by intense enemy fire, Staff Sergeant Collins stood up and fired his rifle until it was empty, then seized an automatic rifle from a wounded comrade, thereby freeing the unit for action and saving many lives. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
