The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Chemical Warfare Service) William S. Clark (ASN: 0-1039205), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Chemical Mortar Battalion in action on 24 March 1945 in Germany. On this date the 2d platoon of Company B was in position in Trober, Germany, in support of the 11th Infantry Regiment of the 5th Infantry Division. The men were given march order at 2400 and reached their mortars at 0005 when the German’s launched a tank-supported counterattack from the Southeast. These tanks were firing directly down the street in front of the mortars and platoon Command Post. At the height of the attack two infantrymen were wounded in the street about fifty feet from the entrance to the Command Post. Lieutenant Clark, platoon commander, saw their plight and on his own volition and with utter disregard for personal safety, went out into the street and carried one of the wounded men into the Command Post. Then, still under fire, he went back out and brought in the other wounded man. He helped give both men first aid until they were evacuated. Lieutenant Clark’s heroic disregard for personal safety and courage under fire reflect the highest credit on his character as an officer and upon the military service.
