Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 2 (January 6, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald M. Carnine (ASN: 0-1822358), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Tank Destroyer Battalion, XII Corps in action against an armed enemy on 20 November 1944, in France. While reconnoitering for 3″ Anti-Tank Gun positions near the town of Gusbling, France, Lieutenant Carnine was informed that the Infantry attack was being held up by enemy machine guns situated in a woods 300 yards south of the town. Lieutenant Carnine then reconnoitered a route to bring 3″ fire on the enemy positions but in doing so he discovered a mine field of 13 mines in the road. Realizing the need for speed and with utter disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Carnine personally conducted the removal of the mine field which was under direct 20-mm. Anti-Aircraft and sniper fire. He then ran 200 yards through heavy artillery fire and drove one of the guns, unassisted, into position. His actions resulted in eliminating the enemy positions allowing our Infantry to resume a very successful attack. The courage and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Lieutenant Carnine reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
