The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Fred Gardner (ASN: RA-6359521), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. At about 0300 hours on 19 September 1950, Master Sergeant Gardner’s platoon in defensive position near Uiryong, Korea, was subjected to a severe hostile attack. Despite the intense machine gun and small arms fire, he moved about among the men to lend encouragement and better direct fire of all weapons. He himself, killed six of the enemy. Inspiring his men by his personal courage, determination and skill, he made possible complete rout of the numerically superior hostile force. Master Sergeant Gardner’s gallant and exemplary leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
