The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Sergeant John H. Culnan (MCSN: 77425), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 49th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action at Chateau-Thierry, France, 6 June 1918. While assisting a wounded man to the rear, Sergeant Culnan was himself wounded in the head, but carried out his mission, succeeding in bringing the other wounded man to the dressing station.
