Headquarters, SEVENTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 65 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John M. Burch, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 36th Engineer Combat Regiment, SEVENTH U.S. Army, in action against the enemy from 31 May to 2 June 1944, southeast of Velletri, Italy. On 31 May, his company attacked the firmly entrenched enemy, and numerous men were wounded in action. Private First Class Burch, though exposed and under constant and intense enemy small arms fire, went forward to within 75 yards of the enemy position to administer aid and direct evacuation of the injured. He succeeded in evacuating all injured men from the field of battle. On 1 June, the situation was repeated in a similar manner. Private First Class Burch remained in a forward position until all wounded were evacuated. His remarkable courage and coolness was an inspiration to the men of his company in maintaining pressure in enemy action. Undoubtedly he saved the lives of several men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
