The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold M. Brown (ASN: 0-1306698), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 September 1951 in the vicinity of Pia-ri, Korea. On this date Lieutenant Brown’s platoon was attached to Company E with the mission of assaulting and securing dominating terrain features held by a numerically superior enemy force. As the friendly unit ascended the hill Lieutenant Brown’s platoon was pinned down by a heavy concentration of hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire from well-fortified positions along a ridge. Completely disregarding his own safety, he left his covered position and advanced toward the hostile positions throwing hand grenades and calling for his men to follow him. During the ensuing action Lieutenant Brown single-handedly stormed and destroyed several enemy emplacements and upon noticing the ammunition supply was low, made his way through the deadly hail of enemy fire to obtain the necessary ammunition for his men. His courageous and selfless acts of heroism inspired his men to greater heights of daring and aided immeasurably to the successful completion of his unit’s mission. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Lieutenant Brown reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.

Headquarters, SIXTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 20 (March 30, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold M. Brown (ASN: 0-1306698), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 442d Regimental Combat Team, in action against the enemy on 21 October 1944 in the vicinity of Bruyeres, France. After deploying his platoon, Lieutenant Brown and an enlisted man launched a two-man assault upon a house which he believed to be strongly occupied by enemy troops. As he forced open the front door, his companion quickly fired and stopped an enemy officer’s attempt to escape. Swiftly moving into a second room, Lieutenant Brown and his companion caught 17 hostile troops off-guard and immediately forced their surrender. Lieutenant Brown’s excellent direction of the attack not only led to the capture of the enemy troops, but secured documents and equipment which proved invaluable. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
