The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold M. Brown (ASN: 0-1306698), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 September 1951 in the vicinity of Pia-ri, Korea. On this date Lieutenant Brown’s platoon was attached to Company E with the mission of assaulting and securing dominating terrain features held by a numerically superior enemy force. As the friendly unit ascended the hill Lieutenant Brown’s platoon was pinned down by a heavy concentration of hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire from well-fortified positions along a ridge. Completely disregarding his own safety, he left his covered position and advanced toward the hostile positions throwing hand grenades and calling for his men to follow him. During the ensuing action Lieutenant Brown single-handedly stormed and destroyed several enemy emplacements and upon noticing the ammunition supply was low, made his way through the deadly hail of enemy fire to obtain the necessary ammunition for his men. His courageous and selfless acts of heroism inspired his men to greater heights of daring and aided immeasurably to the successful completion of his unit’s mission. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Lieutenant Brown reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
