The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Chester W. Bornholdt (ASN: 37271935), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, XII Corps, in action against the enemy during the period February 1943 to October 1944, in Africa, Sicily, and France. Upon occasion after occasion in direct action Against the enemy, Sergeant Bornholdt exhibited a remarkable degree of personal courage and devotion to duty with little regard for his own safety and comfort. Accompanying the commander of the *** Infantry Division into areas often under intense enemy artillery and small arms fire, he performed his duties with coolness and bravery that attracted frequent commendations from commanders in his vicinity. On several occasions, where a less courageous driver would have faltered, he drove his vehicle forward into front-line attacking troops where all but he were dismounted and under cover, and on other occasions, where the situation required, he drove through areas under direct enemy observation and machine gun fire. Sergeant Bornholdt’s courage and devotion to duty the highest credit on his character as a Non-Commissioned Officer and upon the Military Service.
