The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Justus H. Bainbridge (ASN: 37036269), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 20 November 1944, in France. Sergeant Bainbridge, while looking for a gun position, was informed that 300 yards sough of Guebling, France, there were three enemy machine gun positions holding up the Infantry advance. Sergeant Bainbridge having discovered a mine field on the road leading to the position and realizing that there was no time to call for the Engineers, started removing the mines immediately while the enemy fired small arms fire at him. Upon completion of clearing the mines he ran 200 yards through an Artillery barrage and brought his crew and 3″ gun into position where he brought fire on the enemy machine gun positions, completely neutralizing them. The courage and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Sergeant Bainbridge, reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
