The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Armor) Gilbert Allis (ASN: 0-1016141), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion, V Corps, in action against the enemy in at Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. When the LCT in which Lieutenant Allis, a liaison officer, was a passenger began to capsize after being hit by an enemy shell while still some distance from shore, Lieutenant Allis and one other member of his crew removed the radio from their vehicle and waded through deep water to shore. Upon reaching the beach, Lieutenant Allis immediately set up liaison between his unit and an Infantry regiment though enemy rifle, machine gun, mortar and artillery fire was directed on the area from commanding positions on the cliff. Lieutenant Allis carried out his duties for a period of some four hours until his death from enemy fire. As a result of his accurate observation and directing of fire, numerous gun emplacements were destroyed, thus aiding materially in the subsequent opening of the beach exits. The gallantry in action of Second Lieutenant Allis is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
