Headquarters, 35th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 52 (July 13, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Infantry) David C. Butler (ASN: 0-1293544), United States Army, for heroism while serving with the 35th Infantry Division at ****, Germany, on 25 February 1945. In the icy rain of a dark night, Lieutenant Butler led his platoon on a security mission in the vicinity of a river soon to be bridged by engineers. When a member of the platoon fell into the frigid stream, its swift current closed over and began to carry away the helpless, struggling victim. Without hesitation, Lieutenant Butler plunged into the freezing water and at the risk of his life, brought the drowning man to safety, where he resuscitated the man by artificial respiration. Lieutenant Butler’s selfless deed, founded on personal courage and devotion to a fellow-in-arms, is a tribute to his character as an officer.
