The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant James Lemaick (ASN: 39093828), United States Army, for heroism while serving with the 35th Infantry Division near ****, Germany, on 24 May 1945. When a member of his squad accidentally fell from the end of a deck into the swift **** River, the man unable to swim, was about to drown when Sergeant Lemaick unhesitatingly plunged into the racing current which by then was taking the drowning man downstream. With difficulty, Sergeant Lemaick brought the unconscious man to shore, where artificial respiration revived him. The courageous action of Sergeant Lemaick, at the risk of his own life to save that of a fellow soldier, is in accord with the military traditions of the United States.
