Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 3969 (October 4, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Sergeant Evans Washington, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 24 July 1970 while serving as First Sergeant with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, a tank fell off a steep embankment, turning over completely and pinning one of the crew members underneath. Sergeant Washington quickly organized a rescue team and moved under the vehicle, giving reassurance to the wounded soldier. He slowly dug the dirt away from the man, all the while in danger due to the precarious position of the tank, The team then slowly lifted the injured soldier from under the vehicle while medical attention was summoned. First Sergeant Washington’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
