Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1338 (October 3, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Anthony D. Uliano (ASN: RA-51436887), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 21 March 1968 while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Sergeant Uliano arrived at the scene of the crash of the regimental command and control helicopter. Upon hearing that two men still remained in the flaming wreckage, Sergeant Uliano obtained two portable fire extinguishers from a nearby truck and expended both extinguishers attempting to subdue the flames. When his efforts proved futile, he jumped into the burning helicopter in an attempt to find the men who were trapped inside but was forced from the aircraft by the flames. At this time ammunition and pyrotechnics inside the ship began to explode but Sergeant Uliano again entered the blazing ship in another attempt to locate and rescue the trapped men. After determining that neither or the men were in the ship, Sergeant Uliano climbed out of the aircraft and assisted in the attempt to extinguish the blaze until firefighting equipment arrived at the scene. Sergeant Uliano’s heroic actions and deep concern for the welfare of his comrades in arms were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
