The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Robert G. Trippy, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 25 March 1970 while serving as a driver with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date a mortar round exploded in the tube of a mortar which mortally wounded the three man crew, Private Trippy, being on the opposite end of the perimeter, raced to the burning inferno realizing that if immediate action was not taken an adjacent mortar vehicle would also be lost in the flames, Even though he was wounded by an exploding round, blinding him in one eye temporarily, he climbed into the driver’s compartment and quickly move the vehicle from the area, thereby preventing the loss of another vehicle and further lives. Private Trippy’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his u it and the United States Army.
