Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 3259 (October 25, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Armor) James G. Snodgrass, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 2 November 1968 while serving as a platoon leader of the 3d Platoon of Troop A, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while escorting a group of postal clerks, Lieutenant Snodgrass was wounded when his vehicle struck an antitank mine. Ignoring his wounds, he immediately deployed his elements into a defensive position. Despite the intense flames and disregarding the possibility of the ammunition and demolitions exploding, he pulled the men out of his vehicle to safety. He then led his men in extinguishing the flames in the disabled vehicle. After loading his wounded on the medical evacuation helicopter, Lieutenant Snodgrass, refusing medical evacuation for himself, stayed to direct the reinforcements in a sweep of the area. First Lieutenant Snodgrass’ courage, concern for his men and outstanding leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
