The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant David C. Shaw, United States Army, for heroism not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 28 July 1970 while serving as a vehicle commander with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, as the troop was preparing for a reconnaissance mission, ammunition on one of the armored vehicles suddenly began exploding. Immediately, Sergeant Shaw dismounted from his vehicle and ran to the smoke engulfed vehicle in an attempt to rescue the crew members. Numerous grenades were ignited and greatly hampered rescue operations. Sergeant Shaw, disregarding his own safety, began throwing the grenades off the vehicle and, in the process, received serious burns. He then aided in removing the injured men and administering first aid while preparations for medical evacuation were being made, Sergeant Shaw’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
