The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fifth Class Aaron F. Relford, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 25 March 1970 while serving as a vehicle commander with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date a mortar round exploded in the mortar tube, mortally wounding the three man crew, With fragments and explosions ripping the air, Specialist Relford raced toward the flaming inferno only to be hurled through the air by a tremendous explosion. Even though he was injured he returned to the burning holocaust to carry one man out and bring him to safety. With flames leaping about him and the danger of nearby illumination rounds exploding, Specialist Relford returned to insure all personnel were clear of the burning vehicle. Specialist Five Relford’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
