Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 3968 (October 4, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fifth Class Kevin C. Overfield, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 24 July 1970 while serving as a Tank Commander with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, a tank fell off a steep embankment, turning over and pinning one of the crew members underneath it. Although the vehicle was in a precarious position, Specialist Overfield moved under the vehicle. Knowing the danger that the vehicle could fall onto both of them, he slowly dug the dirt away from the trapped soldier, while giving him reassurance. He then lifted the injured man from beneath the tank so that medical attention could be administered. Specialist Five Overfield’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
