The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Raymond W. Miller, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 26 June 1970 while serving as a vehicle commander with Troop K, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, a helicopter was removing equipment from Fire Support Base Susan when one of its engines exploded, causing the craft to burst into flames and crash to the ground. Specialist Miller, with complete disregard for his own safety, ran into the flaming inferno and aided one of the crew members to safety. He then reentered the aircraft to free the trapped pilot and help him to safety. Specialist Four Miller’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
