The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain (Infantry) Francis Irsch, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 1 July 1863, while serving with Company D, 45th New York Infantry, in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for gallantry in flanking the enemy and capturing a number of prisoners and in holding a part of the town against heavy odds while the Army was rallying on Cemetery Hill.
