Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 384 (February 13, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) James T. R. Johnson, Jr. (ASN: OF-111646), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with as armed enemy on 29 November 1968 while serving as the executive officer of the Howitzer Battery, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date in the vicinity of Xuan Loc, the squadron’s Howitzer Battery was making a tactical road march from its field position back to the ÒBlackhorseÓ base camp. Suddenly, on the outskirts of the village, an ammunition-laden track vehicle exploded and was engulfed in flames. Lieutenant Johnson immediately organized a fire fighting team and attempted to extinguish the flames. Observing the futility of their efforts, he ordered everyone away from the burning vehicle. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he remained in the immediate vicinity and removed a number of Vietnamese civilians who were in imminent danger. Minutes later the vehicle blew up, showering burning debris throughout the area. Again he exposed himself to the exploding rounds as he ran from house to house, extinguishing fires caused by the burning debris. First Lieutenant Johnson’s personal bravery, unwavering devotion to duty and deep concern for the welfare of Vietnamese Nationals were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
