The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Second Lieutenant (Armor) John V. Hurynowicz (ASN: 0-5023194), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Second Lieutenant Hurynowicz distinguished himself by valorous actions on 20 October 1966 while serving as a member of an armored vehicle unit of Troop A, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, during a sweep and destroy mission. The vehicle had tipped over and gasoline ignited in the engine. All members escaped except the vehicle commander who was trapped under ammunition cases. As the fire spread, ammunition began to explode, throwing. Shrapnel in all directions. Despite the danger to himself, Lieutenant Hurynowicz entered the vehicle amidst the exploding shells and pulled the vehicle commander safely away from the armored vehicle. His quick actions saved the vehicle commander from the fire and an explosion which destroyed the vehicle moments later. Lieutenant Hurynowicz’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
