The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major (Armor) Charles E. Humphries (ASN: 0-2276605), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Humphries distinguished himself by valorous actions on the early evening of 30 January 1968, while serving as Commanding Officer of the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. A helicopter experienced engine failure and crashed on the airfield at Lai Khe, Vietnam. Major Humphries immediately rushed to the scene and began organizing rescue efforts. Despite exploding ammunition and intense flames, Major Humphries entered the cockpit and freed the co-pilot, who bad sustained multiple fractures of the arms and legs and was trapped in the burning aircraft. Despite painful facial injuries and burns, Major Humphries carried the man clear of the wreckage, saving a life at the risk of his own. Major Humphries’ heroic actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
