Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 4392 (August 31, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Sergeant Frederick W. Hotzman, Jr. (ASN: RA-12309061), United States Army, for heroism not involving conflict with an armed hostile force, in the Republic of Vietnam. First Sergeant Hotzman distinguished himself on 20 June 1967 while serving with Troop L, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, during Operation Akron. As evening mess was being served, several mortar rounds aboard an Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle were inadvertently ignited, starting a flash fire which threatened to detonate more than thirty rounds of explosives and white phosphorous beside the vehicle. Reacting immediately to the critical situation, Sergeant Hotzman realized that there were two crewmen trapped inside the track. In complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Hotzman braved the intense heat and flames to evacuate the critically injured men. He then proceeded to extinguish the fire. Sergeant Hotzman insured that the casualties received proper medical attention and then called for medical evacuation. His actions were instrumental in saving two lives and preventing further injuries and damage. First Sergeant Hotzman’s courage and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
