Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 4421 (December 3, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant William Hollars, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 16 August 1970 while serving as a Track Commander with Troop G, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, while Sergeant Hollars working in the motor pool, a fire began in the ammunition holding area adjacent to the motor pool. Munitions and explosives were detonating from the fire, sending burning debris and fragments throughout the area. A pallet of machinegun ammunition had started burning as well as some C-4 explosive, which started a fire on the deck of an armored assault vehicle. Sergeant Hollars helped secure firefighting equipment and with complete disregard for his personal safety, extinguished the deadly fire, thus minimizing supply losses and injuries to his men. Sergeant Hollars’ actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
