Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1743 (November 26, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Lawrence W. Herrington (ASN: US-54439922), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy 6 October 1968 while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Specialist Herrington was working in the Blackhorse ammunition storage area when an illumination flare suddenly detonated. The resulting fire spread rapidly to nearby containers of flares, igniting them also. In spite of the intense heat from the burning flares that could detonate the stored ammunition, Specialist Herrington immediately secured a fire extinguisher and attempted to put out the fire. When the extinguisher proved to be insufficient to extinguish the raging fire, Specialist Herrington maneuvered his hydraulic fork lift to the burning pallets of flares and began moving them to an open portion of the dump in order to isolate the fire. His immediate reactions averted the destruction of the Blackhorse storage area. Specialist Four Herrington’s courage and disregard of personal safety in the face of imminent danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
