The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Ronald L. Henry, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Henry distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 2 December 1970 while serving with Company H, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date an armored personnel carrier suddenly burst into flames. Sergeant Henry’s immediate reaction was to warn his fellow soldiers and civilians in the area of the impending danger as he ran to the enflamed vehicle with a fire extinguisher. Despite his continued efforts to extinguish the flames, the vehicle continued to burn and soon the fire began detonating the ammunition stored within the vehicle. Adding to the present danger was the fact that there were oxygen tanks also stored in the vehicle. Sergeant Henry, realizing that he could not extinguish the fire, dismounted and quickly unloaded the oxygen tanks. His quick thinking and brave actions contributed to saving the lives of the individuals in the immediate area as well as preventing damage to valuable government property. Staff Sergeant Henry’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
