The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Duane R. Grover (ASN: RA-22868538), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy while serving with Troop G, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four Grover distinguished himself by heroic action on 3 June 1967. While preparing his vehicle for perimeter guard duty, a grenade was accidentally detonated inside another assault vehicle in the motor pool, and the vehicle immediately burst into flames. Concerned for the safety of the crew members of the burning vehicle, Specialist Grover ran to the scene of the accident. He observed that one of the crew had been knocked unconscious by the blast and was lying on the floor in the blazing vehicle. Although the fire had become so intense that ammunition inside the vehicle was exploding, Specialist Grover, with complete disregard for his own safety, plunged into the flames and dragged the unconscious man to safety. Due to Specialist Grover’s courage, the crewmembers life was saved. Specialist Fourth Class Grover’s heroic actions and determination in the face of great danger are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Task Force Oregon, and the United States Army.
