The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Armor) David C. Godwin, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 25 January 1971 while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date a large drum of gasoline overturned, spread to a nearby burning block of explosive matter, and thus ignited. The blaze then spread to two nearby trailers, one of which contained ammunition and explosives. The ammunition rapidly began to burn and explode, endangering the lives of all individuals within the area. Observing this and realizing the inherent danger of this situation, Lieutenant Godwin immediately rushed to the scene of the fire and moved one of the trailers out of the area. After accomplishing this, he returned and began to remove the remaining ammunition trailer. Ignoring the intense flames, exploding small arms ammunition, and the serious burns he received, Lieutenant Godwin continued with his efforts and removed the enflamed trailer from the area. As a result of his actions, a major catastrophe was averted and many lives were saved. First Lieutenant Godwin’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
