Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 824 (October 9, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Armor) Joseph A. Gibbs (ASN: 0-2321601), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Gibbs distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 5 July 1967 while serving with Company H, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. On that date, Lieutenant Gibbs was participating in a search and destroy mission. The tank elements under his command were leading the column when an assault vehicle hit a mine, overturning it and seriously wounding several of its crew members and mortally wounding the driver. Lieutenant Gibbs immediately took command of the situation. He deployed security around the disabled vehicle and then directed his own tank to the vehicle and upon reaching the scene of the incident, hooked cables to the overturned vehicle. As the vehicle was righted, it burst into flames igniting the ammunition and grenades stored within. With complete disregard for his own welfare and safety, Lieutenant Gibbs attempted to free the body of the driver from under the burning vehicle; but because of the extreme danger to his own crew, was forced to abandon the attempt. Lieutenant Gibbs then secured a landing zone and assisted in the evacuation of the wounded. As a result of his valorous action, the wounded were quickly evacuated, Lieutenant Gibbs’ heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
