Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 235 (January 30, 1971)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Chief Warrant Officer (CW-2) John P. Fryer, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 29 September 1970 while serving as a vehicle commander with 2d Platoon, Troop K, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic or Vietnam. On this date, the Second Platoon was on a reconnaissance mission when suddenly a tank detonated a mine causing the vehicle to be engulfed in flames. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Warrant Officer Fryer dismounted his vehicle and ran to the burning tank. At great risk to his own life he pulled the boxes of ammunition from the flaming vehicle and extracted the injured crew member. Chief Warrant Officer Fryer’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
