Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 814 (March 21, 1971)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Armor) George T. Barton, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 25 January 1971 while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, a large drum of gasoline overturned, spread to a nearby burning block of explosive matter, and thus ignited. The blaze spread to two nearby trailers, one of which contained ammunition and explosives. The ammunition rapidly began to burn and explode, endangering the lives of all individuals within the area. Captain Barton, reacting quickly to the situation, immediately moved to the scene of the blaze and began to evacuate the burning trailers. Ignoring the blaze and exploding munitions, Captain Barton unhesitatingly moved the burning ammunition trailer from that section of the perimeter and then returned to remove the other blazing trailer. After accomplishing this, he then diverted his efforts to extinguishing the blaze. Captain Barton obtained a shovel and began to cover the burning and exploding ammunition with dirt until he noticed a burning case of explosives. Captain Barton quickly moved it away from the burning ammunition and succeeded in extinguishing it. Due to his heroic efforts, no casualties were sustained. Captain Barton’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army
