The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Joseph V. Meehan (ASN: 37187991), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, on 27 March 1945 in Germany. When his platoon was halted by heavy enemy small arms fire during its advance, Sergeant Meehan, a Platoon Sergeant, rushed the enemy, firing as he went. His quick and daring action forced the enemy to take cover, enabling his men to advance and capture the position. Pressing on, Sergeant Meehan again exposed himself to a hail of enemy fire to cross a road and secure a house from which the enemy had direct observation of friendly positions and movement. The courage and aggressiveness displayed by Sergeant Meehan reflect the highest credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
