The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Raymond A. Ziehmer, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Ziehmer distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 10 March 1970 while serving as a gunner with Troop L, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Private Ziehmer was serving as a gunner aboard the platoon leader’s vehicle when they came under intense enemy rocket propelled grenade fire which wounded the platoon leader. L After aiding the platoon leader to safety Private Ziehmer informed the other elements of the situation. Soon after, the began to receive intense small arms fire from the well-entrenched enemy. When the return fire proved ineffective against the enemy bunkers Private Ziehmer dismounted his vehicle and aggressively assaulted a bunker and destroyed it with hand grenades. Private First Class Ziehmer’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
