The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Ronald C. Wyse, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 18 March 1969 while serving as Commanding Officer of Company D, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while conducting a reconnaissance in force operation the company was suddenly engaged by a well-entrenched enemy force using small arms, automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades. After quickly organizing his three platoons into a line formation Captain Wyse led an assault on the hostile positions. As the vehicles advanced on the enemy he repeatedly exposed himself to the hostile fusillade in order to give directions by hand and arm signals. When a second enemy force began firing on the company’s right flank Captain Wyse led one of his platoons to attack the hostile positions and accurately fired on the enemy with the main gun of his tank. Upon realizing that several of his men required immediate medical evacuation he called in a helicopter and cleared a landing zone while continuing to place suppressive fire on the hostile positions. After supervising the evacuation of the wounded he rejoined his company and pressed the attack until the enemy had been completely routed. Captain Wyse’s courageous and skillful leadership, devotion to duty and concern for the welfare of his men were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
