The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) Gary L. Worthy (ASN: 0-5254634), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty while serving as Aero Scout Platoon Commander with the Air Cavalry Troop of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while flying a low level reconnaissance mission over a thickly vegetated area, Lieutenant Worthy observed an enemy base camp consisting of a large number of well-fortified bunkers. Suddenly as they were making another low level pass over the enemy complex the aircraft received an intense barrage of enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. Lieutenant Worthy immediately directed mini-gun fire into the hostile positions and with complete disregard for his own safety continued to make low level passes over the area marking the hostile positions with well-placed smoke grenades. Moments later while making another low level pass, Lieutenant Worthy’s aircraft was raked by heavy automatic weapons fire critically wounding him and damaging the aircraft. Although seriously wounded Lieutenant Worthy through sheer determination and superior pilot technique managed to keep control of the aircraft. Realizing that he was losing consciousness he instructed his crew chief to assist him in flying and landing the aircraft. First Lieutenant Worthy’s unwavering devotion to duty and professional ability were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
