Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 1279 (May 24, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) William W. Wisenor (ASN: W-3162159), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 22 March 1969 while serving as a helicopter co-pilot with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while on a low level scouting mission Warrant Officer Wisenor alertly spotted three enemy soldiers seeking cover. After his crew had engaged the hostile troops with automatic weapons fire, killing all three he made a pass over the bodies and observed a bag which he assumed was used to carry documents. When he relayed this information to the mission commander he was directed to lead a platoon of armored cavalry assault vehicles into the area to retrieve any intelligence material. While Warrant Officer Wisenor was flying over the area to guide the friendly ground troops his aircraft suddenly came under intense automatic weapons fire from a concealed hostile position. Through the pilot was mortally wounded and Warrant Officer Wisenor was seriously wounded by the enemy fire, he was able to maintain control of his helicopter and land it in a secure landing zone. His quick reactions prevented a crash that would have meant certain death for himself and the other members of the crew. Warrant Officer Wisenor’s outstanding courage and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
