The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major (Armor) Robert A. Wagg (ASN: OF-110940), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 25 July 1968 while serving as an aircraft commander with the Air Cavalry Troop of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Major Wagg monitored a distress call from one of the unit’s long range patrol teams, which was engaged in heavy contact with a numerically superior enemy force. Major Wagg immediately flew to the scene of the fierce engagement at which time he observed that the team was completely surrounded by the enemy forces. Major Wagg unhesitatingly maneuvered his aircraft through a fusillade of heavy enemy anti-aircraft fire, and expertly directed helicopter gunships in assaults against the entrenched enemy positions, thereby pinning the hostile forces down and allowing him to set his aircraft down in a small landing zone. After a wounded soldier and two other members of the team had been placed aboard the ship, Major Wagg again directed his craft through a barrage of automatic weapons fire and evacuated the wounded to a medical facility. Major Wagg’s courage, dedication to duty and disregard of personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
