The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Technical Sergeant Sean M. Larson, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Lyman, Mississippi, on 25 September 2001. On that date, Sergeant Larson attempted to rescue victims of a house fire while returning to Iowa after completing technical training at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. While driving on United States Highway 49, he observed a house on fire, and with total disregard for his personal safety, attempted to rescue the occupants inside. Sergeant Larson initially attempted to enter the burning residence through the front door and when that failed, through the second-floor window. Two individuals escaped the burning building from the rear, possibly due to his warnings and attempts to enter through the front door. When Sergeant Larson was informed that additional individuals were in the house, he climbed a nearby ladder to gain access through the second floor window. Neighbors assisted Sergeant Larson by spraying water on him while he attempted to rescue the three remaining individuals, however, he was unsuccessful due to the intense heat and smoke from the fire. He was later treated for smoke inhalation and hand wounds at a local hospital. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Larson has reflected great credit upon himself, the Air National Guard, and the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Chief Master Sergeant Sean M. Larson, United States Air Force, for meritorious achievement as Group Superintendent, 755th Air Expeditionary Group, 455th Air Expeditionary Wing, while engaged in ground operations against an opposing armed force at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, from 14 March 2007 to 1 August 2007. During this period, in support of the International Security Assistance Forces and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Chief Larson’s exceptional leadership and devotion facilitated the growth and cohesiveness of the group, ensuring flawless command and control of over 1,000 Airmen at 35 remote and austere locations directly supporting United States Army and Coalition operations. His relentless determination and keen insight were crucial to resolving numerous request-for-forces and in-lieu-of sourcing difficulties, thus enabling the proper and effective utilization of Airmen within Afghanistan. He was undaunted in his support to Airmen’s welfare by visiting them on the battlefield, often in harms way. He participated in 28 combat missions, traveling over 6,000 miles throughout the country via aircraft and ground assault convoys. Finally, when significant issues arose with the utilization of Intelligence Airmen, Chief Larson single-handedly worked coordination between United States Central Command Air Forces Intelligence staff and local Army leadership to improve communications between the two organizations. The exemplary leadership, personal endeavor, and devotion to duty displayed by Chief Larson in this responsible position reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
