The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Henry Smith Bogan (MCSN: 71454), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Seventy-Eighth Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Thiaucourt, France, on 15 September 1918. Sergeant Bogan led a small detachment in an attack on a machine-gun which was holding up the advance, capturing the gun and five of its crew. Sergeant Bogan then continued the advance, entered the hostile trenches and cleared them for a distance of 150 yards, remaining all day in this advanced position under continuous artillery and machine-gun fire.

War Department, General Orders No. 37 (1919)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Henry Smith Bogan (MCSN: 71454), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Seventy-Eighth Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Blanc Mont, France, 3 October 1918. During the attack on Blanc Mont, Sergeant Bogan, without aid, captured three machine-gun nests, and, after being wounded, took thirty prisoners. He himself escorted these prisoners to the rear rather than have the line weakened by taking men for this duty.
