Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 3402 (October 27, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Robert D. Strawbridge, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 2 June 1969 while serving as an air craft commander with the Aviation Platoon, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Warrant Officer Strawbridge was flying the regimental command and control helicopter when it suddenly received intense automatic weapons fire for a small force of North Vietnamese. Despite the intense volleys, Warrant Officer Strawbridge helped guide the aircraft in an erratic pattern to avoid being hit and then helped to direct accurate suppressive fire He then directed the pilot who maneuvered the ship at tree top level to allow the regimental Commander to observe the enemy fore. When the ship was flying low, he exposed himself to the enemy fire by leaning far out over the target area to mark the positions with smoke grenades for the gunships which were arriving. After the gunships had left for new supplies, the command and control ship remained to hover over the enemy force, intimidating them. Its presence permitted the capture of two North Vietnamese and prevented the removal of one body. Warrant Officer Strawbridge’s courageous actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
