The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Daniel Stocki, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force of 9 July 1969 while serving as an armored cavalry assault vehicle driver with the 919th Engineer Company (Armored), 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date elements of the 3rd Platoon were providing rear security for a truck convoy when they were suddenly hit by intense barrages of small arms, automatic weapons and antitank grenade fire from an unknown size North Vietnamese Army force. Specialist Stocki’s vehicle was hit by a series of rocket propelled grenades which killed three crew members and seriously wounded a number of others, including Specialist Stocki. Despite his wounds he leaped from the driver’s compartment and began pulling the injured personnel back into the vehicle. L Ignoring the hostile volleys, he helped as many as possible before climbing back to help load ammunition for a partial crew so that suppressive fire could be initiated. After the heavy fire had finished, he maneuvered his assault vehicle to help establish a temporary landing zone for the medical evacuation helicopters. He continued to administer what first aid was possible and made certain his comrades were evacuated before he allowed himself to be treated. Specialist Four Stocki’s unwavering devotion to duty and total concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
