Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 402 (February 24, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) James J. Steele (ASN: OF-111009), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 24 November 1968 while serving as the commander of Troop I, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Lieutenant Steele led a dismounted reconnaissance patrol through an area of dense jungle terrain. Suddenly the small friendly force came under intensive enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. During the opening moments of contact, the point man was critically wounded and pinned down by the heavy concentration of enemy fire. Lieutenant Steele, observing his comrade’s desperate position, crawled through the hail of hostile fire to aid the wounded man. While attempting to rescue the trooper, Lieutenant Steel was also seriously wounded. With complete disregard for personal safety and ignoring his pain, Lieutenant Steele continued to direct his men’s suppressive fire upon the hostile elements until he was forcibly evacuated from the scene. First Lieutenant Steele’s unwavering devotion to duty, deep concern for his comrades and personal bravery were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
