The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fifth Class Michael J. Seigler (ASN: RA-14874941), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Troop L, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fifth Class Seigler distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 21 July 1967, while serving as medical aid man participating in a road march when the convoy encountered a numerically superior Viet Cong force. During the initial burst of enemy fire, Specialist Seigler observed a nearby vehicle erupt into flames. Without regard for personal safety, Specialist Seigler rushed through the withering enemy fire to the burning vehicle and immediately began treating the wounded crew members. Realizing that the vehicle was about to explode, Specialist Seigler courageously evacuated the crew members to a nearby ditch. Spotting several more disabled vehicles, Specialist Seigler dashed through the devastating concentration of Viet Cong fire in order to find and treat the wounded. Twice entering disabled vehicles, Specialist Seigler single-handedly carried the wounded med to the relative safety of a ditch while in full view of the enemy. Realizing the need for evacuation of the injured soldiers, Specialist Seigler secured the use of a vacant Military Police jeep loaded the wounded men on board and quickly drove through hostile fire to the rear of the convoy and safety. Specialist Seigler then called for a helicopter to evacuate the comrades and again exposed himself to the insurgent fire as he directed the aircraft into the landing zone. Throughout the encounter with the Viet Cong, Specialist Seigler displayed outstanding courage and concern for his fellow soldiers and was directly responsible for saving the lives of eleven men. Specialist Fifth Class Seigler’s extraordinary heroism while engaged in close combat with a numerically superior Viet Cong force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
