Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1068 (March 24, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Russel B. Scohy, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 27 December 1969 while serving as a pilot with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Warrant Officer Scohy was directed to an area of enemy contact. As he approached the area, Warrant Officer Scohy began receiving heavy anti-aircraft fire from enemy automatic weapons. In spite of the intense fire, he flew low over the area lying down a suppressive barrage of fire. Circling low over the enemy troops, Warrant Officer Scohy marked each enemy troop concentration with smoke. Warrant Officer Scohy returned to the area three times, each time marking targets and bringing devastating fire to bear on the enemy troops. His efforts greatly aided in the defeat of the enemy force. Because of Warrant Officer Scohy’s determination and dedication, a minimum of casualties were sustained by the friendly forces. Warrant Officer Scohy’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
