Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1067 (March 24, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Field Artillery) James B. Schaffer, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 17 January 1970 while serving as a pilot with the Aero Scout Platoon, Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while conducting a visual reconnaissance mission in support of the 3d Squadron, Captain Schaffer’s aircraft began receiving intense enemy fire which started a fire in the aircraft and seriously wounded Captain Schaffer. In spite of the damage to the ship and his painful wounds, Captain Schaffer skillfully guided the burning aircraft to the ground. Once on the ground, Captain Schaffer insured that his passenger was safely removed from the flaming craft and then began organizing the information he had obtained concerning enemy activity. Captain Schaffer quickly relayed the information to the rescue team when they arrived. Captain Schaffer’s courage and determination saved his own life and that of his passenger. Captain Schaffer’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
